The Buzz Box® Story

In 2007 my wife’s aunt invited our young family (kids aged 9 and 7) to a supper at a rural CT diner. Aunt C brought some old Christmas cards to show us how to fold them into a box with a top and a bottom. Our kids so enjoyed this activity I decided to use this concept to make a hands-on activity to engage people of all ages in whatever cause intrigued them.

After several years of experimenting with various sizes, paper qualities, and printing techniques, I added features to augment the boxes’ utility. I made a set of three “nesting” boxes, added a QR-bar code, included an amulet and a quote inside, and worked with a commercial printer to design a die that both cut and creased the component pieces. After several more years of experimentation I produced the first of many Buzz Box sets.

This first mass production application was for one of the earliest campaigns of environmentalist Bill McKibben, 350.org “Moving Planet” implemented in Sept 2011. We produced two more McKibben nesting, origami box campaigns in 2016 (Go Fossil Free) and Third Act (2023). 

In 2014 we produced a successful series for the Smilow Cancer Hospital and the  Yale Children’s Hospital. These boxes opened up a series of applications for  healing organizations, (e.g. hospitals, hospice centers and therapy centers.) Other campaigns followed for such causes as local food  production, college campus student mental health, early childhood education, etc. The common theme is simple – “When we heal others, we begin to heal ourselves.”

In summary: I am a serial entrepreneur with extensive experience in the fields of healing art therapies, clean energy technology, and sustainable business  development. It is my mission in life to help people fulfill their dreams of  success through connection, creative expression, and a sustained sense of  purpose. Success presumes personal health, high energy, focus, optimism and  the resilience and tenacity to keep trying until you get it right. It is my  aspiration as the founder of Buzz Boxes® that this tool will help us all aspire to  and move towards a more sustainable and just world for future generations of all species.
